SADDLEWORTH
CEMETERY
Opened in 1986, the Saddleworth Parish
Council Cemetery was architecturally designed to fit into a moorland setting. It won the
Phoenix Design Award, and incorporates two sources of inspiration. The first is a landscape
context, which is enhanced by the use of broad belts of indigenous woodland planting. The
second is the dignity or ceremony of the cemetery, which is a reflection of the formality
with which people approach an awareness of loss or bereavement.
The site occupies a west facing hillside
position on marginal land between enclosed pasture and open moorland. The cemetery caters for
conventional burials and also has areas set aside for "green" burials. The first Nature Reserve
Burial Ground was opened in 1996, headstones can only be in the form of a tree or shrub and only
those indigenous to the area can be planted.
The memorial garden lies in the south side
of the main cemetery. A grass walkway separates the garden from the first row of graves and can
be used for the scattering of ashes if required.
